Over the course of 300 days, I conducted a simple test by connecting a 3,200W air conditioner

On average, the air conditioner, when running at its typical operational load, drew about 2,560W, or 85% of its maximum capacity – this meant that daily, it used about 20.48kWh.

Choosing the right solar generator for air conditioners is a task that hinges on understanding the power needs, which are measured in wattage. 

Wattage gives us a clear indication of how much power an appliance, such as an air conditioner, demands for its operation and equally, how much power a generator can provide.

To determine which generator will serve your needs, you need first to find out the wattage your air conditioner requires. 

This information is often available on the unit’s label or within its product manual. 

For example, while a compact room air conditioner might need around 500W, larger models designed for an entire house could demand more than 3,500W.

However, you should note that air conditioners, and many electrical appliances for that matter, have both a starting and running wattage. 

The starting wattage is the initial power surge required to kickstart the unit and is typically higher than the running wattage.

After this initial burst, the appliance will settle and operate at its running wattage. 

For example, an air conditioner could require an initial 2,000W to start but then operate consistently on 1,500W.

2. Battery Capacity and Depth of Discharge (DoD)

When considering the solar generator’s battery, there are two critical factors to keep in mind: Battery Capacity and Depth of Discharge (DoD).

Battery capacity, typically expressed in amp-hours (Ah) or watt-hours (Wh), signifies the total amount of energy the solar generator can store. 

This directly influences the duration for which your air conditioner can run on a single charge. 

For instance, if your air conditioner draws 1,500W and your generator’s battery has a capacity of 3,600Wh, it implies that, theoretically, the generator can sustain the air conditioner for about 2.4 hours

However, real-world figures may slightly differ due to factors like inverter efficiency and energy conversion losses.

Conversely, Depth of Discharge (DoD) represents the percentage of the battery’s capacity that can be used safely without degrading its lifespan. 

Not all batteries are designed to be completely discharged. 

For example, a battery with an 80% DoD indicates that only 80% of its total capacity should be used before recharging – using more of the battery’s capacity might increase its wear over time.

To put this into perspective, if a solar generator has a 3,600Wh battery capacity and an 80% DoD, the effective usable power is 2,880Wh

Hence, an air conditioner demanding 1,500W would run just under 2 hours with this available power.

I personally recommend that you opt for a solar generator with a battery capacity buffer of at least 20-30% and a DoD of no less than 80%

The waterproofing rate is denoted by an IP (Ingress Protection) rating, indicating how well the device can resist dust and water ingress. 

The IP rating is usually followed by two digits. The first digit refers to the device’s resistance to solid particles like dust, while the second digit indicates its resistance to liquids. Here are a few examples:

  • IP65: Dust-tight and protected against water jets from any angle.
  • IP66: Dust-tight and can withstand powerful water jets.
  • IP67: Dust-tight and can be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes.
  • IP68: Dust-tight and can be continuously submerged in water under conditions specified by the manufacturer.

I don’t recommend you settle for a solar generator with a waterproofing rate of less than IP65

Anything below this rating might not provide adequate protection against common outdoor conditions

In addition, it’s essential to know if the warranty includes replacement parts, labor, or both.
